Where it Began

Founded in 2016 by James Worthington, the White Matter Brain Cancer Trust was established to address the needs of those affected by Brain Cancer in New Zealand. James devoted his time to the cause, before losing his own battle with the disease in 2017.

Today, our Trust is led by a group of individuals, each intimately connected to Brain Cancer through the experiences of close family members and friends.

Our Purpose

Brain Cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, with a low survival rate and highly debilitating symptoms. It affects an individual’s ability to work and may also require family members to leave work to take on a caregiver role. It is for this reason that Brain Cancer costs more per patient than any other cancer, adding a layer of financial stress to what is already an extremely difficult time.

This is why the Trust exists. We’re here to ensure that those facing Brain Cancer are still able experience moments of joy, comfort and peace.

Each situation is unique and our application process invites anyone with a Brain Cancer diagnosis to request something tailored to their needs. We fund a range of personalised support options, with the aim to alleviate stress and enhance the quality of life for patients and their families.

Our Impact So Far

Thanks to the generosity of supporters in New Zealand and beyond, we have provided over $370,000 of funding.

We’ve gifted family getaways in New Zealand and further afield, supermarket and petrol vouchers, sleeping bags, mountain bikes, heat pumps, therapy sessions, birthday party catering, engagement rings, trampolines, and more. Every contribution, big or small, has made a meaningful impact on the lives of those we support.
